Shopify's Checkout Pixel Migration Deadline: Don't Lose Your Video Attribution Data
August 26 is the hard deadline for non-Plus Shopify stores to migrate checkout tracking. Here's what breaks and how to protect your video conversion data.
On August 26, 2026, Shopify permanently removes the legacy Thank You and Order Status pages for every non-Plus store still using them. Any tracking pixel or script injected through the old Additional Scripts field stops firing the moment the auto-upgrade happens, with no warning at the moment it hits and no rollback option after. Meta Pixel purchase events, Google Ads conversion tags, GA4 transactions, and TikTok Pixel purchase events all go dark simultaneously if you haven't migrated.
If you're running any kind of video conversion tracking, whether that's attributing sales to a shoppable video widget or just measuring standard ad conversions, this deadline determines whether your attribution data keeps flowing on August 27 or quietly stops.
What's Actually Changing
Shopify has been migrating checkout to a new "checkout extensibility" architecture since 2023. Plus stores crossed their own deadline for the Thank You and Order Status pages back in August 2025. August 26, 2026 is the final wave, covering every remaining Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Pause and Build plan. After that date:
- The Additional Scripts field (Settings → Checkout → Order status page) stops running entirely
- Any app that injected script tags on the Thank You or Order Status page for tracking or customization loses that access
- Shopify auto-upgrades any store that hasn't migrated manually, and removes legacy customizations with no way to revert
The replacement is the Web Pixels API, configured under Settings → Customer Events, which handles conversion tracking through a sandboxed, reviewed framework instead of raw injected JavaScript. It's a genuinely more stable foundation for tracking, but it requires action before the cutoff, not after.
Why This Matters More If You Track Video-Influenced Revenue
Standard ad-platform conversion tracking (Meta, Google, TikTok) mostly has an official path already: install the platform's own app (Facebook & Instagram, Google & YouTube channel apps) and it handles Customer Events migration automatically. The bigger risk is custom or app-specific tracking that was never on anyone's official migration checklist, including any setup measuring which on-site content, like a shoppable video widget, actually influenced a purchase.
Revenue attribution for on-site video shouldn't depend on the checkout page at all. The moment that matters for measuring whether a shopper who watched a video converted is the click and add-to-cart event on the product page, not a script fired after checkout completes. If your video analytics setup was relying on checkout-page scripts for any part of that picture, this deadline is the forcing function to move it onto webhook- or event-based tracking that doesn't depend on legacy checkout customization at all.
The Migration Checklist
- Check your status. Go to Settings → Checkout in your Shopify admin. A yellow warning banner means you have deprecated scripts still in use.
- Audit the Additional Scripts field. Copy everything in it before you touch anything, and classify each script: conversion pixel, visible widget, or vendor tag. Each has a different replacement path.
- Install official Customer Events apps where they exist. Meta and Google both maintain apps that handle the migration for you; check the Shopify App Store before building anything custom.
- Move purchase-confirmation logic off the Thank You page where possible. Server-side tracking via the
orders/createwebhook is more reliable long-term than any client-side script on a page that may not even load for every customer, sincecheckout_completedcan sometimes fire before that page renders at all. - Test before the deadline, not after. Shopify's upgrade flow shows which scripts it detected and asks you to confirm replacements. Run through it now while you still have time to catch gaps.
Migration guides converge on roughly a four-week runway if you're starting from scratch: a week to audit, a week to set up Customer Events for the standard ad platforms, a week to build custom pixels for anything without an official app, and a week to test. With the deadline days away as this cadence closes out, the priority is auditing what's actually at risk today, not waiting for a perfect migration plan.
Don't Let a Platform Migration Erase Your Measurement
The apps and widgets driving your on-site conversions, including any shoppable video powering measurable engagement and revenue lift, shouldn't be vulnerable to a checkout-page deprecation in the first place. ReelTok tracks impressions, clicks, and revenue attribution for every Story, Carousel, and Floating Reel through Shopify's supported webhook and app APIs, not through legacy checkout scripts, so this migration doesn't touch your video performance data at all.
If you haven't checked your Additional Scripts field yet, do it this week. A missed deadline doesn't just break a report, it means real conversion data you'll never get back. Try ReelTok free and keep your video attribution intact no matter what Shopify changes under the hood.
